Family Science Night

Students and families are invited to attend Family Science Night on Thursday, March 9 from 6-7:30 in the Snow cafeteria. Family Science Night is an event that allows families to explore different science concepts in a fun and exciting environment. The cafeteria will be set up with many different hands-on stations to explore science concepts like magnetism and properties of matter.

We need volunteers to help facilitate each station. If you are able to help, please contact Ms. Landis, Mrs. Sehrt or your child’s teacher.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Health and Resource Expo

Newark Unified is hosting its Third Health and Resource Expo for the entire NUSD community.  The Expo is scheduled for Friday, January 20, 2017 at Lincoln School from 1:15 pm-3:30 pm.  The Expo will consist of over forty agencies and will be open to all families in Newark and surrounding areas. This event would be an opportunity for families to take advantage of the many agencies, all in one location, and find agencies that will meet the health and resource needs of their family.

Agencies planned to be in attendance include Washington Hospital, Rockin’ Jump, Ohlone College, Fremont Resource Center, Alameda Food Bank, Promotoras, Fremont Resource Center, East Bay Agency for Children.

Items will be given away by agencies, gifts will be raffled and prizes will be given to participating families who have completed and stamped their passbook by visiting each agency booth. The Expo will be opened by the Mayor of Newark, Hon. Al Nagy. We hope you can join us in this wonderful family event.

NUSD Community Engagement Survey

Newark Unified School District is reaching out to its families for feedback on programs and services. The community engagement survey is now available on the district website. The feedback given will assist NUSD in reviewing its current strategic planning process for the 2016-2017 school year, as well as provide the district leadership with valuable information about community engagement at our schools.

Nixle Alerts in Newark

nixleThe Newark Police Department has launched a new Community Notification Service called “Nixle” to help improve communication with people who live, work, and visit our community. The system provides a quick, efficient, and secure way to get neighborhood-level information out to community members who subscribe to the system. Through www.nixle.com, the department will be able to send text message (SMS) and e-mail alerts to subscribers. Notifications might be considered in the following instances:

  • A young child or adult with Alzheimer’s disease walks away from their home. The alert can include a picture of the child or vulnerable adult with a map identifying the area at which they were last seen.
  • A public safety emergency requires people to stay in or remain away from their homes. A Nixle alert can let residents with a registered address in the affected neighborhood know what’s happening, allowing residents to take a proactive role in their own safety.
  • A serious injury or fatal crash in which traffic investigators close down the intersection for several hours during the morning commute. This situation might warrant a notification to subscribers who live or work in the area, encouraging them to select a different route to work.
  • Other uses: Large-scale public works projects, traffic safety implications around large fire scenes, community events such as parades, fireworks, picnics, etc., details about a case of H1N1 (“swine flu”) in the area, city council meeting information, utility outage advisories/boil orders.

The information can be viewed at www.nixle.com but for notifications individuals must register. To register, visithttp://local.nixle.com/newark-police-department-ca.
