Air Quality Warnings

A Spare the Air Alert is in effect for the Bay Area October 11 & 12, 2017.  Due to the current widespread fires impacting the bay area, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a severe smoke advisory.

Newark USD schools are advised to:

  • Limit outdoor activities to avoid unnecessary exposure to smoke by keeping students inside for recesses, breaks, physical education, etc.
  • Reduce exposure to smoky air by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed, if possible.
  • Move outdoor team practices indoors

Students and staff who are highly sensitive may be experiencing symptoms and we are asking principals to follow standard procedures for students displaying any symptoms that may become problematic by notifying parents immediately. Please note, a Spare the Air day has been called for 10/12 and the Superintendent’s office will notify the schools if it is lifted.

View the Bay Area Air Quality Management District website for updated information.

Instrumental Music for 4th, 5th, 6th

Join the Newark Unified School District after-school instrumental music program.
The program is open to all incoming 4th, 5th and 6th grade students and is funded

by the Newark Educational Foundation. Students will learn to play one of a varie-
ty of instruments and perform in the Elementary Band.

Why should you learn to play and better understand music?
 Learning an instrument is FUN and develops discipline
 Practicing an instrument increases a student’s ability to focus
 Studies show that learning music early in one’s life greatly improves
mathematical and abstract thinking abilities
We will have an information night on Thursday, September 14th at 7:00 PM at
Birch Grove Primary. At this event we will discuss sign-ups and class times. We
will also have instrument demonstrations and a question and answer session.

Classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at Birch Grove Primary. Many instru-
ments are available—and will be provided on a first come—first served basis.

There is NO enrollment fee or other costs associated with the program. If you are
interested, please fill out the form below and return it to the office at your school
no later than September 12th or email this information to Mr. Nunes at the email
address listed below.
